Direct transfer of movies and video to DVD, while possible, severely compresses the resolution of the digitalized material and is therefore an unacceptable choice for archival purposes. Rather, proper transfer is a two step process. First, your old film or tape is transferred uncompressed to an external hard drive to create a full resolution archival master, which can be viewed on a computer and, if desired, edited. Once the master has been completed, the material can then be compressed and burned to a DVD for viewing on a television. After the process has been completed, the external hard drive should be stored in a secure place.
